Instavolt’s new Superhub rapid EV charging station in Winchester, Hampshire, was designed to provide a modern, convenient destination for electric vehicle drivers. The site features ultra-fast EV charging points, an on-site Starbucks coffee shop, and an integrated solar farm – helping drivers recharge both their vehicles and themselves.
To support the hub’s renewable energy infrastructure, a dedicated solar energy installation and battery storage compound were constructed. These high-value energy assets required reliable, robust protection to prevent unauthorised access and ensure site safety – while also respecting the visual aesthetics of the surrounding commercial development.
Our customer, who was contracted to deliver the fencing for this new-build site, required a solution that met the necessary security requirements of solar farms and battery storage sites, while also delivering a clean, visually appealing finish appropriate for a publicly accessible location.
The Solution: Fencing for Solar and Battery Storage Security
We supplied two fencing systems designed specifically for the differing needs of the solar array and the battery storage area:
Solar Farm Security Fencing
To secure the perimeter of the solar farm, we supplied 325 metres of 1.8m high Protek 656 Clip twin-wire mesh fencing in RAL 9005 (black). This fencing system is a proven choice for solar farm perimeter security, offering durability, anti-climb protection, and a neat, low-profile appearance. The installation also included two 3m wide double-leaf vehicle access gates, allowing for easy site maintenance access.
Battery Storage Compound Fencing
For the battery storage fencing behind the Starbucks building, we provided 130 metres of 2.4m high SolarGard Pulsar Plus mesh and timber fencing. This dual-purpose system offered high security and effective visual screening – helping the compound blend into the landscape while protecting critical infrastructure. The fencing included double-leaf access gates for vehicles and pedestrian single-leaf gates fitted with digital locks and protective shrouds for enhanced access control.
The Result: Secure, Aesthetic Fencing for Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The fencing systems delivered a successful balance of form and function:
- Robust perimeter security for sensitive renewable energy assets
- Aesthetic integration with the site’s high-traffic, public-facing environment
- Low-maintenance, long-term performance tailored to the specific site requirements
By combining the Protek 656 Clip mesh fencing with the SolarGard Pulsar Plus system, the project team achieved full perimeter protection across both the solar farm and battery storage facility, supporting the safe and reliable operation of this key renewable energy site.
